If you or a loved one was prescribed Uloric (generic: febuxostat) for the treatment of gout and suffered heart-related issues or injuries, such as a stroke or heart attack, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit against Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Uloric, and receive compensation.
Uloric was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 to treat gout. Gout is a type of arthritis that affects approximately 8.3 million adults in the U.S. It is caused by the build-up of uric acid in the body, which causes redness, swelling, and pain in the joints. Uloric works by lowering the levels of uric acid in the blood.
Takeda marketed Uloric as an alternative to allopurinol (also known as Zylorprim), another gout medicine. However, in clinical studies, Uloric has been associated with several serious heart-related side affects, including chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness or weakness on one side of the body, rapid or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, and sudden severe headache. Some patients have also experienced heart attacks, strokes, angina, heart palpitations, and heart-related deaths while taking Uloric or within 18 months of stopping treatment. Takeda was responsible for conducting these studies and knew about possible heart-related risks before it was disclosed to the public.
On February 21, 2019, the FDA announced that based on the results of a study conducted after Uloric was approved, it would require Takeda to add a warning to Uloric’s label stating that the drug is associated with an increased risk of heart-related death and other injuries as compared with allopurinol. Consumer advocacy groups have asked the FDA to withdraw Uloric from the market.
If you or a loved one has taken Uloric and experienced heart-related issues or injuries, such as heart attack or stroke, you may be entitled to recover damages, including medical expenses, lost income, and compensation for physical and emotional pain.
