Sports Athletes Sexual Assault, Abuse, and Rape
Assault, abuse, and rape also is found within organized sports. A recent example and one of the biggest sexual abuse scandals in sports history is Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics team doctor. On December 7, 2017, a federal judge sentenced Larry Nassar to 60 years in prison for federal child pornography charges. On January 4, 2018, a federal judge sentenced him to an additional 40 to 1765 years in prison, set to run after his first 60, for three sexual assault charges. And that ended one of the largest sexual abuse scandals in sports history.
For decades, Nasser abused his position and sexually assaulted hundreds of young female athletes under the pretense of providing medical treatment. Nassar’s case revealed that abuses in the gymnastics circuit were widespread because the system benefited predatory coaches and staff, like Nassar. Abusive coaches could move from gym to gym, taking advantage of a lax system of oversight, even among USA Gymnastics-certified gyms.
This kind of system allows predators to hide in plain sight, attacking victim after victim, child after child, woman after woman, man after man, with little concern for getting caught. It stops now.
