$650,000,000 Settlement for Pradaxa Cases
In May, Pradaxa maker, Boehringer Ingelheim, a German owned drugmaker, agreed to settle the majority of Pradaxa lawsuits pending in federal court for approximately $650,000,000.00. Pradaxa had previously been linked to at least 500 deaths due to uncontrollable bleeding. The reported injuries include death, stroke, internal hemorrhaging and uncontrollable bleeding. To further complicate the matter, Pradaxa had no antidote to reverse uncontrolled bleeding events in patients. In connection with the settlement, the average payout to each Pradaxa client was $162,500, although this number varies largely depending on the facts of each specific case. Although a settlement was reached, many cases are still pending throughout the nation and we encourage you to contact our firm by filling out the submission form or by calling us at 1-866-694-6774 to determine if you have a viable case, as there are very strict deadlines if you intend on pursuing any claim.
FDA SAFETY ALERT: Pradaxa may lead to serious or even fatal bleeds
The FDA has issued a safety alert warning people who take Pradaxa that bleeding may lead to serious or even fatal outcomes. The drug has been linked to brain hemorrhaging and kidney and gastrointestinal bleeding.
Pradaxa, which is manufactured by pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, is a blood thinner that is taken orally by people at risk of stroke or blood clots. Approved by the FDA in October 2010, critics believe it was rushed to market before proper testing was conducted.
Unlike other anticoagulants, Pradaxa cannot be quickly counteracted by a dose of Vitamin K if abnormal bleeding occurs. There is no easy solution if excessive bleeding suddenly arises in a patient.
The FDA warns that Pradaxa can cause people to bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. People are also warned that suddenly ceasing to take Pradaxa can lead to an increase in the risk of a stroke.
