Invokana Lawsuit Information
Invokana (canagliflozin) was introduced as part of a new type of Type 2 diabetes drug called SGLT2 inhibitors in 2013. Since then, it has been linked to hundreds of reports of leg and foot amputations, kidney failure, kidney damage, diabetic ketoacidosis, and urinary tract infections. The drug works by altering normal kidney functions to filter sugar out.
The FDA has issued multiple warnings about the side effects, in particular amputations and diabetic ketoacidosis – a condition which raises the amount of acids in your blood. The symptoms of ketoacidosis include difficulty breathing, vomiting, nausea, confusion, unusual fatigue, and abdominal pain. The FDA warning recommends people taking SGLT2 inhibitors look for these symptoms and if found, seek medical attention.
A new FDA warning issued in May 2017 warns that Invokana causes an increased risk of leg, foot, and toe amputations. The medication box is now required to have this warning displayed on their labels.
Drug manufacturers have the responsibility to adequately warn patients about risks associated with taking medications.
