The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (www.fda.gov/medwatch) recalled Darvon, Darvocet and Propoxyphene in November 2010. The FDA advisory panel voted 14 to 12 to recommend a recall of Darvocet and Darvon.  The FDA panel found that Darvon and Darvocet use was causing an unusually high rate of serious heart conditions and cardiac side effects. The dangerous painkillers, Darvon, Darvocet and Propoxyphene have been associated with over 2000 deaths and are no more effective than other safer painkillers.

The defective drug is most commonly prescribed as Darvocet, which combines the active ingredient in Darvon, propoxyphene, with acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol.  Darvocet has become one of the top twenty-five most commonly prescribed medications. 

According to the FDA, the dangerous drugs have been prescribed to more than 22 million people. 
Even when taken as directed, research shows that norpropoxyphene, the propoxyphene metabolite, can lead to an irregular heartbeat.  This condition has lead to a deadly rapid heartbeat called ventricular tachycardia.  In the United States, the dangerous drug is sold under the names
